Robert William Long

Robert William Long, most recently of Myrtle Beach, peacefully left this world for a better one on Friday, May 8, 2020.

He was known to most as Bob, but was Buddy to his beloved Flossie (née Florence Gaus) to whom he was married for 65 years. Bob was born and raised in Framingham, Mass., in 1930. He passed up an opportunity to play minor league baseball after high school, choosing to enlist in the Air Force instead. He met and fell in love with Flo while stationed in Miami. Upon marrying, they moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., where they lived a full life among friends and family for many years before retiring in Longs.

Bob loved golf, poker, bowling, square-dancing, and cheering on the Steelers and the Penguins. He was also a voracious reader. Most of all, Bob loved people. Not just his family, but everyone he came across. Strangers quickly became friends. He was a talker, and he was a listener. He was a teller of tall tales, a consummate jokester, and he was quick-witted right to the end. But underneath all the quips and jokes was a kind, sensitive and deeply caring person. He gave generously in time and money to his churches in Pittsburgh (St. Sebastian) and Myrtle Beach (Our Lady Star of the Sea) as well as to numerous charities.

He is survived by his wife Flo; son Chris and his wife Liza; daughter Yvonne and her husband Bill; and daughter Roberta and her husband Bob, as well as by his seven granddaughters, Shayli, Marisa, Kristin, Barbara, Libby, Wren and Annie; and his grandson, Tyler, all of whom loved him very much and miss him deeply.

The family will be holding a private memorial service at a later date.
